Human health is of central importance for all societies. Therefore, education and research in the field of medicinal chemistry has a long history both in Europe and Asia, whereby differences in methods and philosophy clearly exist. The aim of the project Asia-Link (Asia Link) Medicinal Chemistry is to specifically strengthen the collaboration in higher education and research in modern drug discovery between the EU partners and the Asian participants. To reach the aim young researchers from the Asian partners will receive training and participate in research projects at the European institutions, while young European researchers will gain knowledge on traditional medicine and plants at the Asian partners. Stipends to support travel and living expenses are available from the program.

Human health is a central issue for every society. All European member states and the European Union itself annually allocates large budgets to education and research in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery to improve the quality of life by better treatment and diagnosis of diseases. However, modern drug discovery research has become a multidisciplinary and competitive endeavour. Only global expert alliances are able to successfully compete in the race to find new and better drugs.
While intensive collaborations in the field within Europe and the U.S.A. exist due to the training that many researchers receive at the graduate or postdoctoral level in the respective countries before entering pharmaceutical industry or academia in their home countries, rather few interactions with Asian countries have been established. This is particular true for countries such as China and Vietnam, which due to their rich cultural heritage offer huge opportunities for Europe to gain valuable knowledge for health care and drug development. In the Asia Link Medicinal Chemistry programme, such collaboration will be strengthened, inter alia by common teaching activities and research projects with joint PhD supervision by two partners. This will create an advantage for the development of research and education in Medicinal Chemistry in the European Community. The different methods and philosophies in medicinal and pharmaceutical research may make collaboration exceedingly interesting and fruitful.
